Advent at Christ Church Anglican
The story of Christ’s first Advent, his coming in human flesh two thousand years ago, becomes a thematic backdrop for us as we prepare for his second Advent. It is a helpful aid to our own devotion to remember the longing of Israel for the coming of their Messiah as we too now long for his return to complete the work he started long ago.
So as you can see, Advent as a season serves a double purpose; it is not meant to be only about the Nativity of the Lord, as is popularly conceived. It is a season designed to orient our imaginations symbolically around our preparation for Christ’s return, which should define our devotional life throughout the year.
I hope you find these liturgical variations useful to you as you orient your minds and hearts to the eager longing and joyful expectation Advent represents.
Surely the Lord is coming soon. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
