By this time tomorrow, I will be waiting at the airport in Houston, Texas to board a plane to Nigeria. (The geek inside of me is almost as excited that I will get to fly over on one of Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliners as for the trip itself, but that is another matter!) I will be a personal guest of our bishop’s, the Rt. Rev. Julian Dobbs, as we attend a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Anglican Church of Nigeria from Tuesday through Friday. I will be returning on an overnight flight Friday, February 6 through Saturday, February 7 and should be safely back in Philadelphia by the grace of God on Saturday evening, February 7.
I strongly request your prayers and intercessions for my trip. Bishop Julian and I will need your prayers for safe air travels to and from Nigeria, for safe transit within Nigeria and indeed for safe travel for all the hundreds of delegates who will be attending from all over Nigeria (pray especially for safe travels for those delegates coming from the northern part of the country), for good health to prevail, for strength for me to endure the schedule (Nigerians don’t mess around with their church meetings; four days back-to-back of meetings which run from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm!) and finally (and ultimately) for the Spirit’s gracious and illuminating presence among all the people gathered there in the name of Jesus.
The Rev. Gus Calvo from St. George’s Anglican Church in Helmetta, New Jersey will be preaching and celebrating for our principle worship service on February 1. I may be absent, but the worship of Almighty God continues apace nonetheless! Deacon Arica will be at your disposal if you need anything urgently. For my part, I will be generally without the internet or phone during my stay in Nigeria, so don’t expect me to respond to any messages you may send until I return to the United States.
I will be celebrating our worship service like normal on Sunday, February 8. Our Senior Warden Jim Ferguson will preach for us that day. After the service on the 8th, I will give a report on my trip to any and all who are interested.
I look forward to seeing you all when I return. Don’t cause too much trouble without me!
Blessings in the name of Jesus,
